Might buy an extra tube of silicone if the old dash is BADLY cracked, that will hold the new cap off the original dash. I painted the lower portion of dash before installing cap because I didn't want silicone adhesive to get smeared on something I wanted to paint later. Remove or tape carefully things you don't want painted. Do NOT remove the padded portion of the dash. Confirm what you are doing with audio and guages, much easier to work on with the dash on the bench. Clean everything again! Try to confirm everything in the dash works. Think about how much abuse your interior takes. Buy plenty of paint, I used about 3 times as much as I originally purchased. Buy good interior paint, I used SEM brand, get interior primer and clear topcoat. Prep is everything for all paint including interior. I notice you have an offer for a dash from a member,TAKE IT! Make notes or tags taped on things to help re-assembly.Ĭlean everything beyond clean. Pull dash, this really isn't as difficult as it sounds, removing speedo cable was the most difficult for me, remove ALL screws/attachments. You might want to do this first because once you pull the dash you may find some other items you need to get at the junk yards when you are looking for plastic. Color is irrelevant, just condition, you will repaint to taste. Remember much of the interior plastic is identical with similar GM cars like Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Tempest, etc. The "A" pillars are now available reproduction. You can probably find some or all on ebay BUT at a significantly higher price. I started gathering plastic pieces for the interior from a local junkyard, VERY REASONABLE, like less than $5/piece. ![]() Order a new dash cap (correct for ac - no ac) very available. The dash was trashed as well as almost all in the interior plastic. My Elky only had 30K, but had been sitting in the Calif. I had a similar, though not QUITE as severe a problem. This will get you started, break out your imagination and go man go! Got the lights that illuminate floor that go in sides of the console from doors of 01-04 toyota or honda (didn't care which, wanted that shape). Makes for a totally smooth dash.įor shifter, got an old horseshoe shifter at pull your part for $14.95, cleaned it up. Put headlight switch beside heat/ac controls, so that is hidden too. put lil doors in console face, behind one is heat/ac controls, another hides radio. I also hid everything but the instruments. (remember to allow room for whatever padding you'll be using) I converted all the attachment screws to button head torx fasteners, but that's me. Once framework is built, use cardboard again to mock up the sheetmetal covering, again, can use stock attachment points. Use the stock attachment points of old dash. Use cardboard (discarded stove/refridge/radiator boxes are great for this) to make template for framework. The factory made the raw material, build what you want! This is a good chance to make a console that looks like an extension of the dash too, instead of something just stuck on there.Ĭan also change/add whatever instruments you want now. It took 4 back seats ($40) from back of 00-02 cadillacs to redo my whole interior in white leather (I can sew, borrowed a machine that would do the work, or involve your wife/sweetheart). For upholstery material.my local pull your own part yard charges $10 each for seats. Can get the foam in diff density from a fabric store. Make your framework from 1/4 inch round or square tubing, add the sheet metal to it. Had the right curve and the folded over edge was already there. To make a visor for my 83 elco, I used the front edge of a hood from an 84 malibu. If you can't bend sheet metal (gotten from car hoods/trunk lids) then figure out the bends you need, and find them ready made. ![]() Is not near as hard as it seems, and this is a perfect chance for you to do it. I will offer this since you didn't say anything about restoring.build your own!
